More About Kirkwood Cross Country and Snowshoe Center
About
Kirkwood Cross Country's trail system is divided into three sections. The Meadow System, located on the south side of Highway 88, spans the two mile length of Kirkwood Meadow; the Caples Creek System, on the north side of Highway 88, begins at the Cross Country Center; and the Caples Creek System connects with the Schneider Trail System via "Agony" and "Ecstasy" trails. The Schneider trails are located at higher elevations, climbing to over 9,000 feet, thus affording spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding vistas and Caples Lake. These trails may also be accessed by car for those who wish to avoid "Agony" and "Ecstasy," which are both advanced trails.Kirkwood combines outdoor adventure with environmental awareness and education. Many trails feature interpretive signs providing for a more enlightening and meaningful visit. Kirkwoodís Cross Country Center has designed a special trail, the Kiddieís Kilometer, sure to keep any childís attention.
Above all the rest, with a base elevation of 7,800 feet and 80 kilometers of machine groom trails, Kirkwood Cross Country offers the most spectacular scenery and the most exciting terrain in the west. Surrounded by wilderness, trails lead skiers to the top of the Sierra Crest. The natural alpine setting allows skiers to explore trails, which wind downhill, meander through meadows and gently traverse open bowls. The terrain and variety of skiing is unlimited.
Kirkwood Cross Country is a full service resort, offering alpine skiing as well as cross country skiing. Trackside accommodations offer easy access to the Village, Nordic trails and ski lifts. The cross country day lodge houses a retail and rental shop, the ski school, snacks and a friendly, helpful atmosphere. During breaks from skiing, guests can sip hot drinks by a wood burning stove in the cozy day lodge or warm-up in one of the many trailside warming huts
