About Mt Ruapehu - Whakapapa
Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Areas on Mt Ruapehu form New Zealand’s largest ski area, covering 1800 hectares of lift-accessed terrain. Whakapapa is on the northern slopes of the mountain. The mountain is situated in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand’s first national park and a dual World Heritage area. It is the only commercial ski area on New Zealand's North Island. The first skiers ventured on to Mt Ruapehu in 1953.
Mt Ruapehu is an active volcano and the ski areas are located on the traditional lands of three Maori peoples. In September 1887 the sacred mountain peaks of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro were gifted to the people of New Zealand by the Paramount Chief of Ngati Tuwharetoa, Horonuku Te Heu Heu Tukino, thus ensuring their protection for all people of all time. The gift formed the nucleus of the National Park. The upper slopes of the ski area are within the original gifted area and remain tapu (sacred) to the Maori people. |
