About Ski Marmot Basin
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS In the late 1920's, Joe Weiss skied along the snow-laden eastern slopes of Marmot Mountain and found an area he later named Marmot Basin. Joe was originally from Switzerland and came to Jasper soon after arriving in Canada and became one of the early pioneers of skiing and ski mountaineering in the Canadian Rockies. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that the first road was built to connect the highway with Marmot. During the 50's and 60's, access via the road was only possible in converted buses and trucks installed with cat tracks and runner sleds. In 1961, Toby Rayner installed Marmot’s first rope tow on “Paradise” run which was constructed from the remains of an old army truck. Marmot Basin has evolved into one of Canada’s finest ski areas - still the only located in Jasper National Park. The history of Marmot Basin is intertwined with the local community and we share a special place for those who wish to escape to an authentic Canadian ski destination. |
