About Big Red Cats - Cat skiing and Boarding
We ski on 4 mountains in the Monashee Mountains in BC's southern interior. Most of the terrain that we ski is between 1600 and 2,200 meters (However we can ski as low as 1000 meters if the conditions are good). Trees do not normally grow above about 2300-2400 meters in this part of BC. So all of our skiing, like most BC catski operations, is at the "tree line." We have some big alpine open features - but our bread and butter runs are beautifully gladed tree runs. These types of runs have made this part of BC the Cat skiing Capital of the World! Experts will tour the steepest terrain, in bowls, couloirs, and trees. Advanced trips will travel in "black diamond" terrain, cruisey glades, trees, and beautiful bowls. Intermediate trips always begin in lower-angle open terrain, and give powder instruction before progressing into some of the more open gladed skiing. Only 2.5 hours north of Spokane WA at Red Mountain resort, Rossland BC, Big Red Cats offers the option of day trips combined with a resort holiday, or a multi-day catskiing holiday. With separate groups for expert, advanced, and intermediate skiers and riders, we try to make sure that you enjoy your day to the fullest, with others of your level. Meet at 0730 each morning, then we shuttle you approx 30 minutes to the cat, or you drive. Cat ski in deep untracked snow, in glades and bowls, all day, and return to the resort between 4:15 and 4:45 - lots of time to relax in the hot tub before enjoying one of Rossland's restaurants, or eating in your own condo or cabin.

They also have CAA level 2 and 80-hour first aid qualifications, as do members of the safety team, which is a mobile snow-study and rescue unit on the mountain at all times. Tail guides have at least CAA level 1 and a 40 hour wildness first Aid qualification, and most also have CSGA level 1. |
Equipment Used
3 Pisten Bully snowcats - 2 300's and 1 280D - extra fast and powerful cats. Each cat holds 12 guests and 2 guides (other guides are out on snowmobiles checking conditions). Normally we run 2 cats, but we often run the third cat in high season. |

What's New
We have opened the 4th peak, Mt Mackie, which has some excellent expert and advanced runs, and will allow us to offer more terrain, and operate 3 cats without running out of fresh, untracked, interesting runs. Because our mountains can be skied on all sides, and have an excellent ridge structure, there is a minimal amount of traversing. |
Local Lodging
Red Shutter Inn is our lodge www.redshutter.ca, with 6 rooms, each with 2 beds, ideal for a full cat group of 12. It is an older, rustic lodge with woodstove, hot tub and sauna, and full cooked breakfast daily. Not luxurious, but clean, comfortable, social, and extremely well-located near the lifts at Red. 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom luxury condos with hot tubes at the base of Red Mountain all have hot tubs and are $60-90 per person per night, depending on group size and condo selection. |
