Flying time from Melbourne Australia is 2 hours from Sydney or 3 hours from New Zealand. So pop on over on that tour of Australia. Buller is a 3 hour drive ,mostly on the Hume freeway. You'll be parked on the snowline and taxiied to lodgings which range from 5 star spa resorts to backpacker. In winter, there's indoor tennis, movies, rock climbing etc at the community centre.

To be immersed in local mountain life, stay at the Whitt or Kandahar: google skivictoria and look at newsletters on mountain life, ski around, and club racing festivities. When in rome, live with the romans, as they say. this is the place where patrollers and instructors from Squaw Valley, Kirkwood, Heavenly and Alpine Meadows like to ski. The terrain rivals those resorts. And the black runs meet the blue runs so the whole family can meet up at the lifts.
